FAQ

Safety Rails

Is there a way to enhance safeguard against unwanted opening the bed’s safety rail?

Yes. We are occasionally asked if there is a way to prevent the safety rail from being opened by either the bed’s user, or someone outside of the bed, such as a sibling. It is best to call our Customer Service department toll-free at 866-852-2337 to discuss a solution.

My child has outgrown the height of the safety rails. Can I convert my SleepSafe Bed to a model offering more safety rail height?

Yes. Most SleepSafe® – Low Beds or SleepSafe® II – Medium Beds can be converted to a higher bed. A SleepSafer® Bed – Tall Bed can be retrofitted with a SleepSafer® Extension Kit to offer an additional 16¾ inches of safety height protection. Conversion depends on the year your bed was manufactured. Beds manufactured prior to 2009 may not be converted. If you have any questions, give a call toll-free at 866-852-2337.

To convert any bed to a higher model, while keeping the same foundation you will need to purchase a Conversion Kit from SleepSafe® Beds. This kit will include a new headboard, foot board and side panels. You will use your existing mattress, foundation, casters and safety rails.

Insurance may or may not cover the additional cost of the conversion kit. It may be necessary to submit another letter of medical necessity justifying the change. You will need to make the purchase through your local DME provider of SleepSafe® Beds.

Is there a fully enclosed SleepSafe® bed available (a.k.a. canopy bed)?

Yes.

SleepSafer® Bed Extension Offers an Enclosed Top for Additional Safety.

SleepSafe® Beds now offers a top that securely fastens to the SleepSafer® Extension.  For more information, please call us toll-free at 866-852-2337.

The SleepSafer® Extension Kit  maximizes the safety height an additional 16 ¾″ when fitted on top of a SleepSafer® Bed. This latest development allows a maximum of 53″ between the top of the safety rail to the top of mattress using a bunkie board as a fixed foundation.

The SleepSafer® Bed Extension Kit may be ordered initially with a SleepSafer® Bed or ordered separately as a retrofit into an existing SleepSafer® Bed.

• Available for only SleepSafer® Bed models including all foundations.
• The Extension had 6 windows, 3 on each side length, covered by see-through tear resistant mesh fabric to increase ventilation.

How much does a SleepSafe® Bed safety rail weigh?

Each SleepSafe® Bed safety rail weighs about 18 to 20 pounds depending on its finish.

How do the SleepSafe® Bed’s safety rails work? Can they be removed?

On the SleepSafe® – Low Bed and SleepSafe® II – Medium bed, the safety rails really never actually have to be removed. When they are lowered and hanging in place, they most likely won’t be in the way. Only the SleepSafer® bed – Tall Bed will need the top rail removed when full access to the mattress is needed.

When full access is needed in the SleepSafer® – Tall Bed, lower the bottom safety rail first and leave it hanging in place. Then lower the top rail, and while it is hanging in its lowered position, remove it by lifting its hardware and simply set aside.

If the SleepSafer® Bed has an extension, the top rail will raise and lock into a fastener located on the side of the extension, so the top bed rail does not need to be removed.

Note: When replacing the rail for the SleepSafer® – Tall Bed, be sure to put it back the same way you took it off. Set it back in place in its lowered position first and then flip it up to lock in place.

Do all SleepSafe® Beds include windows in the safety rails?

Yes. All beds include 2 safety rails with 3 windows (or mesh screens) in each. On the SleepSafe® — Low Bed and SleepSafe® II — Medium beds, the two safety rails are divided. One safety rail is installed on each side, allowing access to the mattress surface from each side.

In order to maximize safety rail protection with the SleepSafer® — Tall bed, the two safety rails are tiered, one on top of the other. Bed access is allowed from only one side. The back is constructed of a solid wood panel. Most SleepSafer® installations are against a wall and access from both sides is not needed.

When a SleepSafer® — Tall bed is needed and access from both sides is important, a Dual View option is available. The bed will be manufactured with 4 safety rails, two tiered on each side.
